Artists unite to celebrate British Asian Music

Some of the biggest stars of the British Asian Music industry from genres as diverse as Bhangra, R&B and Asian underground congregated at London ’s Hammersmith Palais to celebrate the annual UK Asian Music Awards on Thursday 3 rd March 2005 .

Celebrated artists such as Malkit Singh, Taz from Stereo Nation, Apache Indian, DCS, Sanj J Sanj, Sahara , Sef, Punjabi Hit Squad, Swami, Hard Kaur, The Mixtresses, Sunil Khalyan, J Skillz, Mehsopuria, Metz and Trix, Nasha, Shanti Collective, DJ Ams and Hanif attended the ceremony.

A host of celebrities were also in attendance at the sold-out show. Celebrity award presenters and guests included Tim Kash , Adil Ray, Sonia Deol, Ayesha Dharkar, Nitin Ganatra, Raj Ghatak, Shivani Ghai, Seeta Indrani, Shahin Badar, Bindiya Solanki, Mr Shabz and Football Focus Presenter Manish Bhasin. Mainstream R&B stars Keisha White and Cassius Henry also presented awards to winners.

Asian Dub Foundation opened the show with a spectacular performance. The crowd were also treated to live performances by R&B sensation Sef, Apache Indian, Trick Baby, Punjabi Hit Squad, Mehsopuria and 2 Play.

The star-studded show was hosted by actress Aruna Shields and Stand up comic Kevin Sherwani. VIP guests were served delicious canapés by leading caterers Pride of Asia and complimentary drinks were provided courtesy of Ghandhi Wine Suppliers, Shloer and Bombay Pilsner.

Jay Sean stole the show by winning three awards. The R&B star won the RAF AMA for Best Album, Choice FM AMA for Best Urban Act and a special AMA for Best Video.

Apache Indian received a standing ovation from the crowd when he went up to collect the Lloyds TSB AMA for Outstanding Achievement.

An ecstatic Apache Indian commented: “It is an honour to win the outstanding achievement award. It shows just how far the Asian music scene has come since I started over a decade ago. Thank you to all my fans around the globe – they have been with me from day one and continue to support me today. I am proud to say that it all started in Birmingham – the original home of Bhangra and Birmingham still leads the scene today.”

BBC Asian Network Presenters Adil Ray and Sonia Deol joined category sponsor, Lloyd TSB on stage to present the prestigious award to Apache Indian. Mike Clarke, Lloyds TSB said: “We are proud to be associated with the UK AMA’s and proud to associate ourselves with the overwhelming rich musical talent in the community.”

Legendry Bhangra artist Malkit Singh drove the crowd wild when he sang a few lines as he collected the RAF AMA for Commitment to the Scene. He was delighted with the award and said: “I feel overjoyed to have won such a prestigious award. It was great to receive so much support and respect from my friends and fellow artists who attended the ceremony. I have won many awards in the last 20 years but winning the UK AMA for Commitment to the Scene was a great honour and I would like to thank all my fans and well wishers.”

Renowned Bollywood director, Jag Mudhra presented the Royal Navy AMA for Best International Artist to Taz from Stereo Nation. The international star said: “ I’m delighted to have won the award for best International artist. Having performed around the world over the last few years – it is an honour to receive such a prestigious award.”

MTV’s Tim Kash and R&B star Keisha White presented Swami with the award for Best Producer. He said: “ A very big thank you to all those who voted for Swami as Best Producer... Bring on the next generation of British Asian music...Keep DesiRockin'!!! ”

A panel of industry experts decided on the final winners. The panel of eight judges were Sarwar Ahmed – publisher of Asiana Magazine, Zab Khan – Head of Music at BBC Asian Network, Reena Combo – Editor of Desi Xpress, Sunny Suri – Publisher of Movie Magazine, Mr Shabz – (So Solid Crew), Honey Kalaria – Bollywood choreographer and founder of Honey’s Dance Academy, Javaid Ullah – Head of Music Programming at Awaz Radio and also veteran DJ, Sanj J Sanj.

As well as being a member of the judging panel, talented music producer, Mr Shabz presented an award. He said: “I’m so glad that British Asian music and musicians are now being recognised. The UK Asian Music Awards are about giving artists the recognition they deserve. It is about time we had our own award show to celebrate the immense musical talent in our community.”
