BBC ASIAN NETWORK AT WOMAD FOR THE FIRST TIME

The BBC Asian Network joins the WOMAD festival (World Music of arts and dance) at Rivermead in Reading for the first time 28th - 30th July.

The BBC Asian Network will welcome festival-goers in the BBC Asian Network Musical Rickshaw tent, offering live DJ sets from Bobby Friction, Nerm and Pathaan and free music downloads from Brit-Asian artists via the station's listening posts. WOMAD will also be the first outing for the BBC Asian Network's Station Wagon, a converted ambulance which will appear at BBC Asian Network live music events throughout the summer.

BBC Asian Network's broadcasts from WOMAD will include performances from Anoushka Shankar, Nina Virdee and Trilok Gurtu & Misra Brothers on the station's arts, entertainment and culture show Nikki Bedi on the BBC Asian Network and its global music show Pathaan's Musical Rickshaw.

BBC RADIO 3 AND WOMAD PARTNERSHIP CELEBRATES SIX YEARS AND BBC ASIAN NETWORK JOINS THE FESTIVAL 24th July 2006

BBC Radio 3 celebrates its sixth anniversary as WOMAD media partner with a weekend of broadcasts from the festival, and, for the first time, the BBC Asian Network joins the celebrations at Rivermead in Reading.

This year Radio 3 has its own dedicated broadcast stage, hosting acoustic performances from headlining acts as well as World on Your Street live performances. Radio 3 broadcasts seven hours of live music from the world ' s leading world music festival, introduced by Andrew McGregor, Andy Kershaw, Fiona Talkington and Lucy Duran, as well as having an even greater live presence than before at WOMAD.

BBC Radio 3 ' s broadcasts  -  including live sets from the two main stages, recorded highlights, interviews and special performances from the BBC ' s mobile studio  -  cover the entire weekend, from Friday night (28 July 10.15pm) with Andrew McGregor; Lucy Duran with a special edition of World Routes on Saturday afternoon (29 July 1.00pm), Andrew McGregor late on Saturday (29 July 10.30pm) and Andy Kershaw in his usual 10.15pm timeslot on Sunday 30 July. The coverage continues throughout the following two weeks in Late Junction with Verity Sharp, and on World Routes with Lucy Duran on Saturday 12 August.

WOMAD WEEKEND BROADCASTS
Friday 28 July, 10.15-11.30pm:
Andrew McGregor starts the weekend with a show including performances from the Mahotella Queens from South Africa, Värttinä from Finland and England ' s Bellowhead, as well as a live performance on the Radio 3 stage from Vusi Mahlasela. There is also a session with Chinese flute player Guo Yue from the BBC studio truck.

Saturday 29 July, 1.00-2.30pm:
Lucy Duran introduces a special World Routes featuring a live performance by Niger ' s desert blues group Etran Finatawa as well as Sudanese rapper Emmanuel Jal and Colombian salsa from Roberto Pla, and recorded highlights from sitarist Anoushka Shankar.

Saturday 29 July, 10.30pm-1.00am:
Andrew McGregor and Lucy Duran introduce live performances from Nigerian Afrobeat star Femi Kuti on the Open Air stage, and percussionist Trilok Gurtu with Indian classical singers the Misra Brothers from the Siam Tent. There are also performances from Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe and flamenco singer Enrique Morente, and Fiona Talkington introduces an acoustic set from Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabete live from the Radio 3 stage.

Sunday 30 July, 10.15pm-12.00midnight:
Andy Kershaw rounds off the weekend in his usual timeslot with live sets from Angelique Kidjo from Benin and Marseille-based singer Moussu T, Sudanese rapper and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal and Akli D from Algeria, as well as a performance by Konono No.1, fresh from their success at the 2006 Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

There are further highlights in Late Junction over the following fortnight with Verity Sharp, and on World Routes with Lucy Duran on Saturday 12 August, as well as full coverage of WOMAD at bbc.co.uk/radio3, including complete recordings of many live performances.

Radio 3 stage
For the first time, BBC Radio 3 has its own dedicated broadcast stage at WOMAD 2006. Fiona Talkington will host intimate, mostly acoustic performances from WOMAD ' s headlining acts, including an acoustic set from Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate. The stage also hosts World on Your Street acts from UK-based musicians, including Birmingham ' s Kurdish musicians the Se Tin Trio, Indian classical singer Nina Virdee from Berkshire and London ' s Congolese band Kasai Masai.

The trios opening track 'Fool For Her Love' produced by J-Nas taken from the 15 track album 'Rouge' releasing in stores Thursday July 27th nationwide UK.
 

 'Don't Be Shy' will no longer be released as a single due to various label changes. Mona Records, Envy Recordings and W10 will commission a video for 'Hush' to be shot in the states in August as well as a video shot in Spain by Sony India who will release the album first week of September alongside EMI Arabia followed by JVC Japan who will release the album at the end of the year.
 
 Rouge will perform at the Jewl Awards this Saturday July 8th at the Grosvenor House Park Lane Hilton and then at the Sheraton Skyline Hotel on July 14th. Finishing July with the headlining performance at the Bollywood Fashion Awards in New York on July 29th, where the girls will be styled by none other then Rachel Roy celebrity A list designer to stars such as Jessica Simpson and Helle Berry who is also the
 wife of Hip Hop supremo Damon Dash who will also attend the event alongside Tyra Banks.
 
 The girls on their album:
 ''Were sorry it's taken so long we were never ready for the success of 'Don't Be Shy'. We hoped it would do well but we didn't know it would become the monster smash it became and record labels would be calling to sign us from around the world. We want to shout out to all those that have supported us.
 It's been an amazing journey from the International Indian Film Awards in Holland to our favourite show in Cairo Egypt One Night and from Dubai to New York in recording studios. 'Gal Sun' is the new track taken off the debut album from Jinx, 'Culture Shock'. This Bollywood tune has summer written all over it with. A soulful duet depicting a story of love and emotion by new vocalists Bitti and Sohail Salamat. The tight production on 'Gal Sun', the guitar, strings and R&B undertones all add to the track, the lyrics and melodies both of which were co-written by Jinx. To accompany, the video is reminiscent of an old bollywood love story.

'Gal Sun' features on the album 'Culture Shock' which is released via the Asian Flavaz label and is available to purchase now.

Birmingham based Entertainment Journalist ‘Sohan Kailey’ has just returned from the 7th annual IIFA Awards held between 14-17 June 2006 in Dubai, U.A.E. International Indian Film Academy Awards, the hottest event of the year. The IIFA movement, launched seven years ago, is promoted by Wizcraft International Entertainment and is supported by the Indian film industry, with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador.

Whilst rubbing shoulders with Indian Film Industry stars, 32 year old Sohan met up with the Tom Cruise of Indian Cinema that is ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ himself. Abhishek son of Indian superstar actor Amitabh Bachchan had just finished the the music launch of forthcoming film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehana (a Karan Johar film).

On asking Abhishek Bachchan on how he felt about acting with his superstar father Amitabh Bachchan, he replied, “At home he is my dad, even on set whilst at the recording studios, we joke around. But when the recording starts and the cameras role its a different ball game altogether. When Dad appears on set in front of you, I think ‘Oh man I am standing in front of Amitabh Bachchan.”

Sohan also interviewed Hollywood actor ‘Jean Claude Van Damme’ who was invited as special international guest at the IIFA Awards ceremony.
